ZOANTHUS & PALYTHOA

ZOANTHUS

Zoanthids are a small, soft coral that spreads by growing outward from the main colony.

They are very colorful and far less picky about water parameters than LPS and SPS corals. Zoas are a variation of palythoa coral with small polyps. 

Zoanthids are photosynthetic coral, however they do not demand nearly as much light as many other corals.

Need to know

Some strains of zoanthus, not all though, may contain palytoxin. Its impossible to identify which strains/morphs of zoanthus those are. 

Palythoa – for example palythoa grandis all contain palytoxin, a highly poisonous substance that can harm you if you don’t handle them with care.

Good advice

Because of this, you should always use gloves and safety glasses when handling zoanthus/palythoa, be gentle and never squeeze them as this can cause them to shoot out toxin in a defense response and try to keep them submerged as much as possible when handling/fragging.
